In the end, it came down to will as much as skill, stamina as much as strategy, as the pure-team champion Taos Ice Tigers clinched their third win in four games Sunday (Feb. 27), taking down the composite champion Albuquerque Outkast 4-3 in overtime for bragging rights as the top champ in the state.
The Taos squad had faced Albuquerque twice already, going 1-1, with a state-championship win over Los Alamos squeezed in between. There was still an empty slot at the top of the bracket, though, with Taos and Albuquerque each holding one loss in the double-elimination tournament.
It was a back-and-forth game that pitted two evenly matched, and clearly fatigued, teams; neither could accumulate more than a one-goal lead through 36 minutes of regular play and eight minutes of sudden-death overtime.
Taos struck first, but Albuquerque landed two in a row to take the lead before the opening period was over. The Ice Tigers evened it up in the second period and took a 3-2 lead early in the third, but Albuquerque promptly evened the score again, where it remained as the buzzer rang.
Taos needed most of the 10-minute, sudden-death overtime to finish things: Isaiah Tyree flipped the game-winner past the Outkast goalie nearly eight minutes in, sealing Taos' 21-3 record and a strong season firmly at the top of the league.
Taos goalie Andrew Moon was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

The state-champion Ice Tigers took their first of two final games against Albuquerque Outkast Sunday (Feb. 27), with one game remaining to decide the owner of the End of the Trail Trophy, which goes to either the pure- or composite-team champion.
The Ice Tigers went down 4-0 against the composite champion Albuquerque, which draws talent from several high schools, in their morning game, but advanced in the double-elimination tournament to take the pure-team (one school) division with a 5-1 win over Los Alamos. Taos also reclaimed the Northstar Trophy, a symbol of the rivalry between Taos and Los Alamos.
In the pure-team championship, the Ice Tigers gave up the first goal of the game less than two and a half minutes in, but soon started piling on the goals.
They tied the game up with 5:42 left in the first, then took the lead three minutes later and landed one more just before the period ended. A pair of goals in the second period, 30 seconds apart, put the Hilltoppers away for good.
With Taos sitting on one loss in the double elimination tournament, they faced off against the Outkast team to see who the last champion standing would be. Again, they gave up the first goal, but against roared back into the game with two of their own before the first period ended, then went up 3-1 in the second period.
Albuquerque landed two goals and knotted the score just before the second period finished, but Taos went up again a couple minutes into the third, landing two more back-to-back goals for the 5-3 win. Both teams hold one loss now, and will face off again for the final game of the season at 7 p.m. at the Taos Youth and Family Center.

The Taos hockey team took a 7-0 win over St. Pius Saturday morning (Feb. 26) in their first game of the state tournament, hosted at the Taos Youth and Family Center.
The Ice Tigers played a strong, physical game, overwhelming the Sartans with two goals in each of the first two periods and three in the third. Isaiah Tyree notched a hat trick, while Andrew Moon put up a shutout performance between the pipes.
Taos goes on to play the fourth-seed Cibola Cougars, one of only two teams to hand the Ice Tigers a defeat in a 17-2 season. The game is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. at the Youth and Family Center ice rink; a win puts Taos back on the ice at 8:30 a.m. Sunday (Feb. 27), one game away from the championship round, while a loss sets them up for a 7 a.m. game Sunday.
